FrieslandCampina Ingredients Early Life Nutrition Goes Organic

2020 - 28 - 04Innovation/ScienceNews/TrendsEarly Life Nutrition

The demand for organic products has gained popularity in recent years as consumers increasingly consider the health and environmental consequences of their food choices. This is also reflected in buying behaviour. Globally, 20% of people look at an organic claim when buying a product with 36% saying these influence their purchasing behaviour (source: FMCG Gurus).

What it means to go organic

Organic foods are grown and processed in such a way that protecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity are central. Organic farmers give their cows 100% organic feed and take care of their cow’s health by encouraging their natural immunological defense. Once the organic milk is collected at the farm, it follows a separate route though production to make sure it is not part of the non-organic streams.

Organic Infant Nutrition Market

Of all food categories, the Baby & Toddler category has shown the strongest growth in organic product launches over the past year. In 2019, more than 5,000 organic Baby & Toddler products were launched globally. This represents a growth of 200% compared to  2015 (source: Innova).  Organic Infant milk formula experienced the highest growth, increasing 30% in value to reach EUR 2 bln in 2019, and is expected to grow at 13.5% CAGR over 2020-2024 (source: Euromonitor). This reflects the growing interest among parents for organically sourced milk formula.

Organic Ingredients for Early Life Nutrition

Breastfeeding is the best nutrition for newborn infants. In cases when breastfeeding is not, or insufficiently, available, infant formula is the only safe alternative. At FrieslandCampina Ingredients, we are building an organic ingredients portfolio for Early Life Nutrition to meet the growing consumer demand. Our newly launched Organic portfolio covers functional ingredients such as Vivinal® GOS Syrup Organic and Hyvital® Whey EtD 100 Organic. Both ingredients are certified organic under EU and US legislation, with Vivinal® GOS Syrup also being certified in accordance with China organic standards. Vivinal® GOS Syrup Organic and Hyvital® Whey EtD 100 Organic have the same functionality as the conventional ingredients.
