SBTi: FrieslandCampina emission reduction targets contribute to The Paris Agreement for 1.5°C

2022 - 30 - 06

The globally renowned Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated FrieslandCampina’s climate targets. Because FrieslandCampina also wants to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius, earlier this year the company published its climate plan with concrete reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions. SBTi has now confirmed that FrieslandCampina’s 2030 climate targets* are in line with the maximum 1.5 degrees Celsius warming agreed in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Working together to achieve goals

Peter Boterman, Global Director Corporate Sustainability FrieslandCampina: “FrieslandCampina produces quality food and we want to do this in balance with the planet. A sharp reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions is therefore one of our priorities. It is very important that our climate goals and actions are concrete and measurable. That is why we have had our emissions reduction pathway assessed by SBTi. They are the global experts to assess whether the targets set are in line with the earth’s maximum global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Of course, we realise that making plans and setting targets is not enough: we have to work very hard to achieve our goals. Of course, we do not do this alone, but in close cooperation with our member farmers and other parties, from customers to NGOs, from governments to scientific organisations.”

Additional investments

FrieslandCampina’s climate goals and actions towards 2030 are laid down in our publicly available climate plan, ‘On the way to climate-neutral dairy’. This plan states which reductions must take place and where in the chain. For scope 1 & 2, such as in production locations and transport, that is a reduction of 63%; for scope 3, a larger part of the chain is involved and a division has been made: 33% reduction by the member dairy farmers and 43% reduction in the other scope 3 categories, such as packaging and other raw materials. Combined, the goal is a 37.5% reduction in scope 3 emissions. To realise its climate plan, FrieslandCampina expects to invest around 1.5 billion euros this decade.
FrieslandCampina’s climate plan is part of the integral sustainability programme, Nourishing a better planet, which, in addition to the climate, also focuses on good and affordable nutrition, a good income for farmers, biodiversity, sustainable packaging and the sustainable sourcing of raw materials.

*SBTi validation:
SBTi is an initiative of United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) and CDP. More than 3,000 companies worldwide have committed to SBTi. SBTi has established that FrieslandCampina’s greenhouse gas reduction target (2015-2030) of 63% for scope 1 & 2 is in line with the 1.5 degrees Celsius goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. It also notes that FrieslandCampina is committed to reducing absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 37.5% within the same timeframe.
