Sustainable Ingredients

At FrieslandCampina Ingredients, we’re always exploring new ways to make our ingredients more sustainable. In line with our ambition to provide climate-neutral dairy by 2050, we have developed reduced carbon solutions and ingredients supporting biodiversity.

Reduced carbon infant formula ingredients

We now offer reduced carbon infant formula ingredients. With these, you can develop lower carbon infant milk formula that meets the needs of today’s planet-conscious parents. They also enable you to achieve a lower carbon footprint that is claimable for your sustainability targets. All our carbon footprint data is verified by a third party. Every ingredient based on milk from our member farmers can be supplied with a reduced carbon footprint.

Carbon footprint reduction is realised at farm level via various emission reduction initiatives like smart breeding and feed additives, deforestation-free and locally produced feed, investments in manure digestors and renewable energy generation.

Ingredients supporting biodiversity

Our consumer research

Qualtrics sustainability survey with parents, September 2020, N=651, countries Netherlands, Germany, France, Indonesia, China

shows that parents are also concerned about our planet’s biodiversity.

Our Bees, Birds and Butterflies concept can be leveraged to meet the demands of nature-conscious parents thanks to its unique biodiversity supporting credentials:

1) Promoting natural landscapes
More trees, hedges, flowers and ditches to house birds, insects and other animals
2) Protecting meadow birds
Meadow birds need grasslands with resting periods for breeding. And during nesting season, mowing should take place later – or not at all.
3) Planting herb-rich grasslands
Important habitats for birds, insects and other small animals.

This concept can be applied to any member milk-based ingredient.

Carbon footprint reduction is calculated in accordance with commonly-used standards, including (but not limited to):

  • the GHG Protocol
  • ISO 14064
  • ISO 14067
  • PAS 2050

To meet our own carbon footprint reduction commitments, FrieslandCampina works closely with its member farmers to implement various emission reduction initiatives at farm level. You can find more detail of these here. We report on those reductions annually.
